Free Barn Cats

Share

July 19th, 2010 by webmaster

Georgetown Animal Shelter is offering free barn cats for anyone that has a farm or ranch and would like some help with rodent control. The cats will be spayed/neutered and given their rabies vaccination.

Semi-feral is a term used to describe animals that are not completely socialized to humans. Because of this, these cats are not meant as house pets, but can live a productive life “earning their keep” by providing their owners with very effective pest control.

“This program was created to give feral cats an option to find a home.  These cats, through no fault of their own, have not been socialized, but they can be incredibly hard-working additions to area farms and ranches,” says Jackie Carey, animal shelter director.

To get a new mouse-catcher to feel at home on your farm or ranch, it helps to have some sort of way to keep them confined to the barn area for a couple of weeks until they realize that this new place is a safe home.

Please call before stopping by.  The shelter will schedule to have the cat spayed or neutered before it can be adopted, and there may be a wait list for your new feline farm-hand depending on the number of available cats at the shelter.

For more information, call Georgetown Animal Shelter at (512) 930-3592 or email Jackie.Carey@georgetown.org.

We were so excited to see the free barn cats since we have a need for a cat that can protect themselves and our barn on our 25 acres. After calling first and driving over an hour to Georgetown, my daughter was presented with a very rude lady who said the cats were not availalbe. I called and was also treated very rudely – in fact she hung up on me. She says she is the only one there – July 20 at 2:00 – and whoever she is – is not representating the City well.

I’m sorry if you were not given the correct information when you called here. We do not have the cats altered until we get a request for them. I am the Manager and I spoke to your daughters when they were here after they spoke to one of our volunteers. I explained to your daughters the procedure and said we would be happy to give them feral cats as soon as we had them ready. I will speak to the volunteer that talked to your daughters. If you would like to email me or call me I would be happy to speak to you.
Sincerely,

Jackie Carey
