February 2nd, 2010 by Keith Hutchinson

On a cold and wet morning this past Saturday, 18 students from Southwestern University braved the chill to plant trees at Raintree Park. The students are members of Alpha Phi Omega, a service organization at Southwestern.

Heather Brewer, urban forester with the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, worked with the students to coordinate the tree planting.

The students planted 17 trees, all Texas natives or drought-tolerant species. The trees planted include Mexican buckeye, Texas mountain laurel, desert willow, Monterrey oak, cedar elm, and lacebark elm. The funding for the trees and irrigation came from the heritage tree mitigation fund.

Raintree Park is a small neighborhood park south of the university near Southwestern Boulevard.

For information about tree plantings, contact Heather Brewer, urban forester for the City of Georgetown, at (512) 930-6113, or by email at hbrewer@georgetowntx.org.
