College Planning for High School Juniors

graduation_cap_and_diplomaThe Georgetown Recreation Center is now offering a College Planning Course for High School Juniors, which will be held at the Teen/Senior Center and the Georgetown Public Library. This course is instructed by Independent Education Consultant, Patricia Ann Nehme, who is a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

Interested students will have the opportunity to choose between Monday or Tuesday evening sessions, which will begin on January 25, 2010.

The cost is only $60.00 per series, which consist of four one-hour sessions. Sessions are as follows:

The High School Junior – Keys to College
Meets Mondays from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at the Georgetown Recreation Center

or Tuesday from 6:30 – 7:30 pm at the Georgetown Public Library
$60 per series (four 1-hour sessions)

Series I – Exploring Careers & Majors; Understanding Admissions Tests

  • Key to understanding your strengths, interests, abilities and admission tests overview –  1/25 (Teen Center) or 1/26 (Library)
  • Key to the exploring majors, degrees & careers– 2/1 (Teen Center) or 2/2 (Library)
  • Key to identifying your college options,  tapping into your passion, volunteer opportunities–  2/8 (Teen Center) or 2/9 (Library)
  • Key to college visits, fairs, receptions, interviews & events –  3/1 (Teen Center) or 3/2 (Library)

Series II – Financial Aid & Scholarships for Juniors (for parents)
Meets: March 8 (Teen Center) -or- March 9 (Library)
*Cost: $15 for one hour session

  • Key to understanding college costs, financial aid & the current economic climate
  • Key to searching for scholarships
  • Key to working through the FAFSA & Profile
  • Key to financial literacy & college loans

Series III – Junior Year Wrap Up
*For parents and juniors

  • Key to summer college programs and college visits – 3/22 (Teen Center) or 3/23
  • Key to narrowing down your college options – 3/29 (Teen Center) or 3/30
  • Key to organizing & managing the college admission process –  4/5 (Teen Center)  or 4/6
  • Key to senior year & NACAC College Fair – 4/12 (Teen Center)  or 4/11 (Library Session on Sunday, the 11th)
