July 9th, 2008 by Keith Hutchinson

After reducing the total road and bond project list to approximately $87 million (including issuance costs), the City Council voted to move forward with a plan for a bond election on November 4. The vote was 7-0 in favor. At the meeting last night, the council cut approximately $33 million in projects from the initial list.

City staff will formalize project costs and present the revised project lists at the July 22 council meeting. In order to hold a bond election on November 4, the council would have to approve a final list and call the election by the end of August. Project lists can be revised until then.

Revised Road Bond Project Proposal

At the July 8 meeting, council members reviewed the initial road project list and voted to remove two widening projects for segments of Airport Road that totaled $17.5 million. The revised list is as follows:

Cost
(millions)

Revised Road Bond Project Proposal

$13.2

1. FM 971 widening (segment from Austin Avenue to 130 Tollway)

$6.0

2. Southeast Arterial 1 (segment of new road from Maple Street to Southwestern Boulevard)

$2.5

3. SH 29 routing study

$1.7

4. Northwest Inner Loop/DB Wood Road (added lanes at Williams Drive intersection)

$7.4

5. FM 1460 widening (segment from Quail Valley Drive to Inner Loop Road)

$9.5

6. FM 1460 widening (segment from CR 166 to Westinghouse Road)

$3.9

8. Berry Creek Drive widening (segment from Airport Road to SH 195)

$44.2

Total for road projects

(Note that the widening of Williams Drive/RM 2338 from DB Wood Road to Ronald Reagan Boulevard is not on the list since the City Council has already approved City funding for the project. The City is working with Williamson County to fund the project.)

Revised Parks Bond Project Proposal

On the list of potential parks projects, the council voted at the July 8 meeting to reduce the amounts for some of the projects, but did not cut any of the six projects completely. The amount for Garey Park development was reduced by $10 million, the amount for San GabrielPark renovations, including an amphitheater, was reduced by $2.5 million, and the amount for new hike and bike trails was reduced by $3 million.

The revised list is as follows:

Cost

(millions)

Revised Parks Bond Project Proposal

$10

Garey Park development

$10

San Gabriel Park renovations, including amphitheater

$5

New hike and bike trails

$4

Purchase land to preserve open space

$5

Purchase and develop land west of I-35 for park and sports complex

$2.5

Convert two smaller pools to spray pools

$36.5

Total for parks projects

With bond issuance costs included, the total cost for both revised project lists is approximately $87 million. Bond projects would be phased over 10 to 15 years to limit the tax rate impact.

The council plans to review a revised bond project list at the next regular meeting on July 22. Scenarios to show how the bond projects could affect the future tax rate also will be presented at that meeting.

Mr. Burton, are you proposing less investment in the future growth of Georgetown youth and community needs? Please clarify your interpitation of education. I suspect it is narrowly focused on GISD. Please prove me wrong. Pray for the wisdom of our leaders, be a wilfull servant to our ever improving community, and have faith is Gods will.
