We are a family that loves animals. We've had a golden retriever/lab mix for 12 years. She has had to be tied up for most of those years, because we care about her. She digs under fences and gets out of everything we put her in. We've recovered her from the animal shelter at least twice and from neighbor's houses more than I can count. Dogs are very smart; she learned very quickly how not to get herself tangled around the trees. The statment "Dogs tethered for long periods can become highly aggressive" is not true for all dogs. Our dog is very loving and not the least bit aggressive. I believe agressiveness comes from the breed of dog, not whether it's tethered or not. A couple of years ago we were finally able to afford a wireless fence and do away with the tethers, but this is not an option for all families.

5 million people are attacked by dogs every year, and 1,000 people go to emergency rooms every day as a result of a dog attack; many of them are children, and about half of them have been bitten in the face.- Mr. Jones is Right. Congradulations city council, for putting dogs before the people.
-I give this the 2008 blunder award.

This is not a victory its actually a loss! yes a victory for dogs but a loss for the people. I guarentee Georgetown's number of people bitten by animals go up. dogs can dig holes under a fence. and dogs can attack. congradulations!!! you just gave an uncontroled animal more freedom and more opertunity to attck your family! think of your kids.

Thank you for your nice comments, we too are thrilled that our city council also feel that the dogs of Georgetown are entitled to have a better life! December 24th will be a wonderful day when the ordinance takes effect - merry christmas to our 4 legged friends.

Though I live in Atlanta I send cheers and vibes in the general direction of Georgetown Texas. What a splendid precedent to set and hope this idea catches on everywhere, and quickly. See, there are things a government can do besides separating a citizen from his wallet!

It's about time we start respecting animals more. They are always loyal to us, so we should care for them without limitations- including chaining them up!

This is awesome. It is a true victory for our four-legged friends.
For our pitty and rottie friends I was happy to see the addition to the bill prohibiting wrapping a chain or tether around a dog’s neck, or using a chain or tether that weighs more than five percent of the dog’s body weight.
Way to go Georgetown!!
